Louisa County has outperformed Albemarle County on the SOLs since 2014.
Note: SOLs are just one measure of how we are doing, and we shouldn’t “teach to the test.” However, it is important to have metrics, and at least on this one, the trend is concerning.
In the circle on the left you will see that from 2015-2019 the following counties outperformed us: Augusta, Fluvanna, Louisa, Orange, and Rockingham (the last only through 2018). We fared better than others during Covid and therefore didn't experience as large a drop in 2020. However, in the circle on the right you will see that EVERY other county began to improve from 2021-2022... but not ACPS. We continued to decline.
When we look at this we have to ask:
What are we doing differently?
What needs to be changed?
5 of our elementary schools have <50% reading pass rate for 3rd graders.
10 of our elementary schools have <75% reading pass rate for 3rd graders.
35% of 3rd graders – 357 students! – failed the reading test in 2022.
...Those children are four times as likely to drop out of school.
Teaching children to read is the most fundamental of responsibilities of a school system.
We need to do better.
Our disappointing reading scores cannot be attributed to Covid learning loss.
This is part of a longterm trend.
Last year, 64% of all of our third graders passed
the SOL Reading test.
That is 2 points below the state average.
Their scores have dropped 6 points in two years.
Last year, 35% of our Economically Disadvantaged third graders passed the SOL Reading test.
That is 17 points below the state average.
Their scores have dropped 6 points in two years.
Last year, 31% of our Black third graders passed the
SOL Reading test.
That is 22 points below the state average.
Their scores have dropped 29 points in two years.
Last year, 40% of our Hispanic third graders passed the
SOL Reading test.
That is 10 points below the state average.
Their scores have increased 7 points in two years.
